Janet Sumner

Executive Director

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Wildlands League

Janet Sumner has more than 20 years’ experience as a professional environmentalist.

She has been Executive Director of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) in Ontario, the Wildlands League, since 2003. During that time, Janet has led CPAWS in achieving substantial legislative reforms, notably to the Provincial Protected Areas and Conservation Reserves Act (2007); the Mining Act (2009); the Far North Act (2010); and the Endangered Species Act (2007).

Janet is an expert negotiator, strategist and communicator with extensive policy reform experience. She also has a long history working with industries, including oil and gas, mining companies and forestry giants.

She believes business solutions that are ecologically viable, have the social license to proceed and meet the bottom line are at the heart of our sustainable future. She also believes the solutions to climate change include protecting the world’s most vast terrestrial carbon stores residing in the Boreal ecosystem.

Before CPAWS Wildlands League, Janet was the Communications Director for the Pembina Institute. While at Pembina she led the development of the largest English language climate change web site, climatechangesolutions.com from research to design.

Janet currently is the chair of the Canada-wide boreal program for CPAWS, a steering committee member to the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, and recently retired as board member for the Sustainability Network and the Toronto Environmental Alliance.
