The Honourable Peter Van Loan,Canada’s Minister of International Trade, was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004. In 2006 he served as Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and was appointed President of the Queen’s Privy Council of Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs andMinister for Sport.
In January 2007, Mr. Van Loan was named Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Democratic Reform, and given the responsibility of driving the government’s ambitious legislative agenda. He was next appointed as Minister of Public Safety in October 2008, leading this key Cabinet portfolio until January 2010, when he was named Canada’s Minister of International Trade. Before his election to Parliament, Peter Van Loan practised Municipal Law, working primarily with private sector clients from Canada and abroad, obtaining approvals for development projects.Mr. Van Loan was a partner and chair of the Planning and Development Law Group of the national law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and a member of the Canadian Bar Association – Ontario, Municipal Section. He also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto.Mr. Van Loan obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Geography,Master of Science in Planning and Development and a Master of Arts in International Relations, all from the University of Toronto, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.
