The mental health and wellbeing of women is an integral part of rebuilding, healing, and growing the Canadian economy in a post pandemic world.

As policy makers, business leaders, workers and entrepreneurs prepare for the future of work and the new economy, it is imperative that women are encouraged, supported, and given the opportunities to thrive and lead.

In this Economic Club of Canada exclusive, we explore the intersection of women, mental wellness, and the economy in partnership with Room for Her, an innovative women’s mental health initiative created by Green Shield Association.

Dr. Julie Cafley

Dr. Julie Cafley is a creative, strategic leader and an accomplished academic with expertise in equity and inclusion, public policy, governance, and higher-education leadership.

Previously, she was the Vice-President, Communications and External Relations at the Digital Research Alliance of Canada where she helped to build the Alliance as a new non-profit organization and develop its brand and reputation.

Before that, she worked as the Executive Vice-President at the Public Policy Forum (PPF). Julie built bridges and enhanced the profile and visibility of the PPF while directing its communications, external partnerships, membership and learning teams. In her previous role as Chief of Staff to two presidents at the University of Ottawa, Julie worked closely with the President and the senior executive team to develop and advance strategic initiatives.

Julie holds a PhD in education leadership from the University of Ottawa with sought-after expertise in university presidential mandates. Her thesis focused on higher education leadership and governance through the lens of unfinished terms of Canadian university presidents. She is a frequent writer and speaker on higher education, leadership, and gender equity.

Julie is an active community builder and a collaborative change maker. Whether it is serving coffee and muffins to the region’s homeless people, serving on the board of Parkinson Canada, mentoring young policy wonks, or supporting her alma mater on its Campaign Cabinet and Dean’s advisory council, giving back is integral to who she is and a part of her every day.

Julie is a committed advocate for women and leadership, a constant ally for First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples and an indefatigable champion for diversity initiatives.

Dr. Wendy Cukier, MA, MBA, PhD

Dr. Wendy Cukier, MA, MBA, PhD, DU (hon) LLD (hon) is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and Founder of the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University. She is the co-author of the bestseller, Innovation Nation: Canadian Leadership from Java to Jurassic Park and former VP of Research and Innovation and more than 200 articles on aspects of diversity, inclusion and innovation. Dr. Wendy Cukier is one of Canada’s leading experts in disruptive technologies, innovation processes, and diversity and inclusion. The Diversity Institute has more than 100 research staff and projects include DiversityLeads, which has tracked the representation of women in leadership roles and a host of projects focused specifically on women in technology. The Diversity Institute has also pioneered innovative projects such as the Advanced Digital and Professional Training program (ADaPT), the Women Entrepreneurship Hub and the Newcomer Entrepreneurship Hub. She also leads the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub and a program of research for the Future Skills Centre as well as the new Inclusive Innovation and Entrepreneurship Network (IIE-Net).

Wendy received many awards for her work advancing diversity and inclusion, including the Meritorious Service Cross, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours. She has been recognized with the Harry Jerome Diversity Award, the 2019 CATA Alliance Sara Kirke Award, a YWCA Women of Distinction Award, WXN most powerful women and, most recently, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, Community Builder Award and was named one of the International Women’s Forum 2020 Women Who Make a Difference. She has an MA, MBA, PhD in Management Science and two honorary doctorates.

Harriet Ekperigin is a Senior Business Lead with the Ontario Telemedicine Network. She is currently leading the provincial implementation of the Big White Wall. Harriet has consulted on and implemented several transformative local and provincial projects. Her previous roles include Health Link Lead in the Haldimand county, consultant with KPMG and a former manager in the mood and anxiety department at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health responsible for inspiring the centralized intake process that led to a 40% reduction in wait times. Harriet holds a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a master’s degree in Business Administration and is Project Management Professional Certified.

A Certified Emotional Intelligence and Neuro-Life Coach with a focus on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, she is the CEO of KDPM Consulting Group Inc. as well as the founder of SisterTalk and The Success System.

After 20 years as an international banking leader, Karlyn chose to lean into her Purpose and founded KDPM GroupThe Success System. Soon after, KDPM was born as corporate leaders sought out her unique approach to leadership and equity building. The company provides a suite of tools, technologies, and trainings to create more psychologically safe organizations and foster true transformation. KDPM Group has worked with companies such as UNICEF, Telus, Maple Leaf Foods, Mondelez, Sick Kids Foundation, TD Bank, RBC, the City of Toronto and more.

Komal is the host of the talk show, Lessons Learned, where she leverages her varied life and business experiences and background as a journalist to deeply connect with her guests and global audience on topics of resilience. A recent career highlight for Komal was interviewing former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama in front of an audience of 8,000 for Mrs. Obama’s Canadian stadium tour.

Madelyn Kirby (she/her) is a songwriter and poet from Toronto. She finds inspiration in the vast beauty of the natural world, the unique people who inhabit it, and the unknown of the future, past and present. She tells stories of her own introspection and explores the many questions and strange occurrences in this world. Maddy studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music where she honed her creative writing and songwriting skills, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music. Madelyn is a co-creator of Write the Feeling, a writing workshop series that aims to amplify the unique voices of Toronto writers. Currently, Madelyn spends time writing, singing and playing guitar in her band, Robinson Kirby and with other Canadian artists

Giving back to community is a key part of Mila’s personal brand and purpose. She currently sits on the Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce as Past Chair of the Board, after serving two terms as the Chamber Chair. She also served on the Board of Governors for St. Clair College, Board of Directors for Windsor Essex Community Health Care Centre (WECHC), and was Chair of their Human Resources Committee. Dr. Toledano is a registered Clinical Psychologist. With 2 decades of experience as a clinical psychologist, her areas of expertise include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, Trauma and Stress Disorders, sexual disorders, couples, and marriage coun- selling, and addictions, among others.

She oversees Inkblot’s Clinical Services across Canada and the US including our EAP program, Assessment and Treatment Programs, Disability Management Services, and Health Services, among others. She has been working in the field of employee mental health and addictions in the workplace for over 15 years.

She has been named one of Canada’s Change Agents by Canadian Business Magazine, one of WXN Canada’s TOP 100 Most Powerful Women in Business three times and became the youngest ever WXN “Hall of Fame” award winner in the fall of 2018.

Rhiannon has been a tireless advocate for youth, developing seven national programs under the Jr. Economic Club banner that have impacted over 50,000 young Canadians and provided over $150,000 in academic scholarships. Rhiannon may mingle and do business with the C-suite crowd, but she definitely shouldn’t be confused with the establishment. Inspired by her own lived experience with child poverty as the daughter of a single mother, Rhiannon has become a warrior for women and youth facing barriers.

Rhiannon is the proud mother of two young boys, Luke and Bennett, and enjoys exploring Toronto with them in her spare time.

The Honourable Charmaine Williams

The Honourable Charmaine Williams

Charmaine Williams was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2022 provincial election. She represents the riding of Brampton Centre as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. She is currently the Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity and is the first Black woman to be appointed to a PC Cabinet. Prior to provincial politics, she was elected to the Brampton City Council.

Williams has also had a 19-year career as a certified Multi-Systemic Therapist, Behavioural Consultant, and Counsellor. As a mother of five children, she understands the importance of advocating for those who cannot always advocate for themselves.

As a Brampton City Councillor, she had the opportunity to spearhead numerous economic, social, and cultural initiatives that benefited Brampton communities. Her track record of success is testament to her ability to help communities thrive, build programs and institutions to support vulnerable populations, and provide dependable leadership.

She now carries her passion and experience into her new role as Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, where she intends to make lasting effort that positively impacts women and families across Ontario.

Your Hunni

Your Hunni is a nonbinary singer/songwriter and poet based out of Toronto, ON. They use their voice not only as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, but also as a finely tuned instrument that conjures complex emotion. Your Hunni & Madelyn Kirby are the co-creators of Write The Feeling, a writing workshop series supported by Lunar Studios, which aims to amplify the unique voices of Toronto writers.

Zahid Salman

Zahid Salman

Zahid Salman is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Shield Canada ("GSC"), an integrated health services organization and the first in Canada to be both a payer (offering insurance, administering benefits, and paying claims) and a provider (offering medical, mental health, and pharmacy services). Uniquely structured as a not-for-profit social enterprise, GSC is passionate about promoting better health for all, with a focus on mental and oral health.

With 30 years of experience, including executive positions at international firms and accreditations from Harvard Business School and the Institute of Corporate Directors, Zahid’s position at Green Shield Canada combines his extensive background in business management with his passion for people and social impact.

Zahid is an actuary who has earned Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) and Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designations. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and has obtained his ICD.D designation through the Institute of Corporate Directors

He currently serves on the boards of Green Shield Canada and the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). He has also served in leadership roles on a number of not-for-profit boards including the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region, the York Region Children’s Aid Society, and the Saint Elizabeth Healthcare Foundation.
