Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how Canadians interact with technology and reshaping their expectations around the personalization and responsiveness of the services they receive. At the same time, for businesses, the use of AI has unlocked new opportunities to create and discover value for their customers.

Amber Kanwar is the host of BNN Bloomberg’s flagship morning show The Open and host of tech show The Disruptors. Every morning she brings the days’ trading news and analysis to viewers. She has interviewed CEO’s from across the country’s c-suite, influential political movers and large fund managers. She specializes in covering the stock market as well as Canada’s burgeoning tech scene. She has her Master’s in Journalism from Ryerson University and her Bachelor in Management & Organizational studies from the University of Western Ontario.

Foteini Agrafioti

Dr. Agrafioti is the Chief Science Officer at RBC and Head of Borealis AI. She is responsible for RBC’s intellectual property portfolio in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. She serves as co-chair of the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence, advising the federal government on how to build on Canada’s strengths and global leadership in AI.

Prior to joining Borealis AI, Foteini founded and served as Chief Technology Officer at Nymi, a biometrics security company and maker of the Nymi wristband. Foteini is the inventor of HeartID, the first biometric technology to authenticate users based on their unique cardiac rhythms. She is a TED speaker and serves on the editorial review boards of several scientific journals. Foteini was named “Inventor of the Year” in 2012 at the University of Toronto where she received a Doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering and was named one of Canada’s “Top 40 Under 40” for 2017.

Jodie Wallis

Jodie is the Managing Director for Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Accenture in Canada. Jodie is responsible for expanding Accenture’s business presence in the AI ecosystem, attracting top talent, and bringing innovation and global AI expertise to Canadian clients across all industries. Jodie earned her Bachelor of Mathematics with Honours from the University of Waterloo, where she majored in Operations Research and minored in Statistics and Computer Science. Jodie is also a co-host of the award-winning podcast series “The AI Effect” that explores the state of AI adoption in Canada and opportunities for the road ahead.

Michael Rhodes

Michael Rhodes is Group Head, Innovation, Technology and Shared Services at TD, with a mandate to help TD shape the future of banking while ensuring the bank delivers every day.

Michael leads TD's best-in-class digital team serving more than 12.9 million digital customers, as well as the bank's industry-leading data capabilities, including TD's artificial intelligence (AI) group, Layer 6. He is also responsible for a number of activities to help run, protect and transform the bank, including overseeing TD's technology, cybersecurity, contact center, ATM, collections, and financial crimes and fraud groups. Michael joined TD in 2011 as the head of TD's North American Credit Card and Merchant Services business and has also run the U.S. Consumer Bank.

Michael has over 25 years of international financial sector experience. Prior to joining TD, Michael held a number of senior leadership roles, including CEO of a portfolio company backed by GTCR, a top-tier private equity fund; CEO of MBNA Europe Bank Limited; and CMO at MBNA America Bank. Michael has worked in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland and Canada.

Richard Zemel

Richard Zemel

Richard Zemel is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, where he has been a faculty member since 2000.

Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Psychology at the University of Arizona and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute and at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also the co-founder of SmartFinance, a financial technology start-up specializing in data enrichment and natural language processing.
He developed the Toronto Paper Matching System, a system for matching paper submissions to reviewers, which is being used in many conferences, including NIPS, ICML, CVPR, ICCV, and UAI. His awards include an NVIDIA Pioneers of AI Award, a Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research, a Presidential Scholar Award, and two NSERC Discovery Accelerators. He is a Fellow of CIFAR and is on the Executive Board of the Neural Information Processing Society, which runs the premier international machine learning conference.

Tomi Poutanen

Tomi is co-founder of Layer 6 and serves as TD Bank Group's Chief AI Officer. Prior to Layer 6, Tomi founded three technology companies with exits to Microsoft and Yahoo!. Tomi is a co-founder of the Vector Institute, a leading academic research institute for deep learning. He is a founding fellow at the Creative Destructive Lab, the world's largest AI venture accelerator. Tomi holds an MSc in Computer Engineering and an MBA from University of Toronto.
