Arab Spring: New Democratic Middle East or Foundation for Islamic Revival?

The Middle East has changed its face during the last year. Old dictatorships have collapsed under the feet of the masses marching for “freedom” and “democracy” while others are still struggling to maintain in power. The power of the people, or the “Arab Street,” has become a paramount political factor shaping the Middle East with Islamic colors dominating the international movement of the Muslim Brotherhood. The changing of the regional balance of power creates a more hostile and threatening environment for Israel, and new challenges for the West, including Canada. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said that: "Islamicism is the biggest threat to national security…” (September 2011)  Is his warning justified?
