Minister MacKay discussed the important
relationship that exists between defence procurement initiatives and Canadian
business. Amidst renewed media attention on the government’s intentions to
purchase the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet, Minister MacKay took the
opportunity to speak about the numerous positive ramifications to Canadian
businesses that come with public procurement initiatives. Looking specifically
at the recently announced shipbuilding contracts awarded to communities in BC
and Nova Scotia, valued at $33-billion, Minister MacKay outlined the effects
these programs have on local communities, noting the benefits they bring beyond
employment. A central component of the Minister’s remarks were tying in how
Canada’s defence budget falls in line with his government’s plans to return to
balanced budgets.
