The United Arab Emirates
is Canada’s largest trading
partner in the Middle East and North Africa
region, with Canadian exports to the UAE growing exponentially each year.
There are huge opportunities in the UAE for Canadian agriculture, oil and gas,
and professional services. In fact, there are already over 200 Canadian
companies operating in Dubai
alone. Recognizing this important and growing economic relationship,
Emirates Airline began flying thrice weekly to Canada in October 2007.
Despite overwhelming political and stakeholder support, Emirates remains
restricted to three flights a week to all of Canada, artificially constraining
export potential and stifling the attempts of the Canadian tourism industry to
attract new visitors from the lucrative Middle Eastern market. The President of
Emirates Airline, Tim Clark, will discuss Emirates’ important investments
in Canada, including the
launch of scheduled A380 service to Toronto
effective June 1, his desire to increase that investment, and the obstacles
that stand in the way.
