CANADIANS EXPECT REVERSAL OF FORTUNE IN ECONOMY IN 2010ACCORDING TO ECONOMIC CLUB OF CANADA/POLLARA POLL
TORONTO, JAN 6, 2010 – Canadians have made a major shift to optimism in their expectations for the Canadian economy in the coming year, according to an Economic Club of Canada/POLLARA Strategic Research poll released today.
More than half of Canadians surveyed, 54%, expect the Canadian economy will improve in 2010, compared to only 20% who thought 2009 would bring better times. Percentage of those Canadians who feel the economy will worsen has dropped to 14%, compared to 57% one year ago. Canadians are also feeling more optimistic regarding Canada’s employment situation, with 43% saying the employment situation will improve, compared to 12% one year ago. Only one in five Canadians (22%) feel the employment situation will worsen in 2010, compared to 68% in 2009.
“This marks a major shift towards optimism of Canadians as they look to the New Year,” said Mark Adler, President of The Economic Club of Canada. “In the Canadian spirit that Spring is just around the corner, it shows Canadians’ belief that we are emerging from the crisis with better days ahead.”
